Returning home is its own transition.
ROTEX 7430 is the alumni association of Rotary Youth Exchange in District 7430. We support students through re-entry and involve them in preparing the students who follow.
About the association
ROTEX is the term Rotary uses for students who have completed an exchange and returned home. In District 7430 it is also an active working group of alumni who remain involved in administering and supporting the program.
Rotary clubs sponsor and oversee Youth Exchange. Host families provide accommodation. The district committee manages applications, placements, and student welfare. ROTEX contributes the perspective none of those groups can: recent, first-hand experience of the exchange year itself.
Re-entry and reverse culture shock
Returning students frequently find re-entry more difficult than departure, and are rarely prepared for it. Returnees come home fluent in a language few people around them speak, having missed a year of their friends' lives, and changed in ways their families did not anticipate.
This period passes, and it passes more readily in the company of people who have experienced it. Providing that company is a substantial part of what ROTEX exists to do.
Activities
What ROTEX contributes
- Outbound orientation. ROTEX members attend district orientation sessions, where prospective students can put questions to recent participants directly.
- Inbound reception. Meeting arriving students early in their placement, so they have an established contact before they need one.
- Mentoring. Pairing a returned student with a current inbound or outbound student for the duration of the exchange year.
- District events. Supporting the gatherings that connect students placed across five counties into a single cohort.
- Candid preparation. Setting realistic expectations, including the demanding aspects of the year, because prepared students adjust more successfully.
Membership
Involvement after your exchange
Completing an exchange through District 7430 makes you a member of ROTEX 7430. The extent of involvement is entirely yours to determine.
Attend when you can
Join a reunion, contribute an hour at an outbound orientation, or respond when a prospective student contacts you. This level of involvement is both sufficient and genuinely valuable.
Mentor a student
Take responsibility for one inbound or outbound student across the exchange year, with particular attention during the more difficult months, which returnees are well placed to anticipate.
Help administer ROTEX
Organize events, maintain this site, and work directly with the district committee. ROTEX functions in any given year because a small number of returnees take on this work.
